Many bariatric surgeons are excited about the procedure Gastric Plication (LGP) as a bariatric procedure. It promises to be a simple method (remember, “Less Is More!”) that gives weight loss results as good as sleeve gastrectomy without even the risks of that procedure (staple line leaks (read part one and part two here) or bleeding). [...]
(pic source: here) I am excited (only in a manner of speaking) to announce to you a NEW series of articles for the layman who has just heard of bariatric surgery. This will be part of a new page. You will find, over the next several weeks, more and more articles that don’t deal with each [...]
Weight loss plateaus may occur in certain patients who have undergone a sleeve gastrectomy as a primary bariatric procedure. What are the causes? What is the next step? Some of the commonest things I get asked by patients after bariatric surgery is, “So what can I eat now? When can I eat sweets? When can I drink Coke?” Or words to that effect. Each time, I sigh. It means another ten minute lecture is due on my part. I have to teach an [...]
So you have had a gastric bypass and are now on the way to normal life. You have a party you need to go to. Fine. Till you realise that you can’t eat most things there, and people are staring at you — someone who is saying ‘No’ to every dish being offered. It’s not [...]
The sleeve gastrectomy operation converts the stomach into a long tube with a capacity of around 120 ml (or whereabouts). Obviously, you cannot exceed the newly reduced capacity, and your meals are going to be small, though much bigger than after a gastric bypass. To make matters better (and more interesting) you do not feel [...]
According to this news report, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that people eating a large amount of polished, white rice had a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Conversely, dairy consumption was inversely proportional to diabetes prevalence. The study was based in Chennai at the famous ‘Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Center’.
Abstract of original article is here. The study compares over 75,000 rural people and follows them up over ten years. The study has the interesting finding that the lower the BMI, the higher the mortality. This underscores once again that the problems of rural India are different from those of urban India. A similar study [...]
A well known person in Kolkata called me up for helping her to lose around 20 lbs of fat. “But I don’t have the time to exercise like you!”, she said. (pic source: flickr.com/photos/ geekandpoke/2231731282/) Now, she had no real way of knowing anything about my exercise regime or durations. I took it as a [...]
Bariatric surgeons in India deal with last minute withdrawals/cancellations of procedures, unlike their Western brethren. Why? One of the reasons is the lack of adequate information to the patient. The ill-informed patient may hear someone say something negative about weight loss surgery (often a half-baked myth or a comment based on unrealistic expectations), and [...]
