Dr. Sarfaraz Jalil Baig is a dynamic surgeon who girded his laparoscopic loins by plunging headlong into GI cancer surgery. His experience with the subject exposed him to all the body’s organs and how they take the insults of disease and surgical trauma. His results have been widely acknowledged to be consistent with the high standards of international level surgeons. For example, he has a zero-mortality series of Whipple’s operation (operation for pancreatic cancer).

He gets referrals for solving complex cases from other surgeons, to whom he is always accessible.

Dr. Baig has gained wide experience and diverse skills in gastroenterology, thanks to his habit of constantly upgrading his skills, whether in a premier cancer center in India or a tertiary level hospital in Japan.

He has delivered lectures in many national and international conferences, his latest paper on gall bladder cancer being accepted in the World GI Conference in Barcelona in 2009.

His publications include research on gall bladder mucosa (Tropical Gastroenterology, 2005), acute pancreatitis (Tropical Gastroenterology, 2006), bronchobiliary fistula (Journal of Minimal Access Surgery, 2009), pediatric colorectal cancer ( J Ped Surg of India) and duodenal adenocarcinoma ( Indian Journal of Surgery, 2009).

He has authored two monographs on biliary and liver surgery, and contributed a chapter on surgical nutrition in ‘Textbook of Surgery’ as well.

Dr. Baig treasures one particular achievement in his career: a successful laparoscopic adrenalectomy on a three month old baby.

As a result of these, he is a much sought after operating faculty in the various medical colleges in the Eastern part of India.

Dr. Baig decided to concentrate on bariatric surgery since early 2000s owing to the challenges posed to doctors by the morbidly obese. He has since been seeing a large part of his time dedicated to his bariatric patients, many of whom come from far flung places on the global map.

His life’s ambition consists of being able to take a six-month long vacation in the Himalayas without access to a telephone or television.
